We left our fun tennis buddies in Mesa AZ at the beginning of January and headed for Maricopa, just south of Mesa, then Yuma, east to Dana Point, south to San Diego, and east to Quartzsite AZ, in the middle of nowhere, for a week. We had taken a one week sojourn here last year for QuartzFest, a whopping big 400-rig rally of amateur radio operators in their RVs. Free camping for up to 14 days, and lots of friendship and comparing notes on gear and operations.
Our next trip was six miles, from the BLM lands south of Quartzsite, into town for a dry-camping rally with the El Camino Real Unit of WBCCI, a really fun bunch of Airstreamers from southern Cal. Always a campfire, great food and friendship, fun ukulele playing with them, and lots of walking around. We were 1/4 mile from the huge RV show, zounds of flea market booths, junk junk everywhere. We even found a couple of things we wanted.
In less detail now, we traveled to Orlando by way of Benson AZ, Ft Stockton TX, Spicewood TX, Livingston TX, Crestview FL and Dunellon FL.
We enjoyed, again, Hamcation in Orlando put on by the Orlando Amateur Radio Association, Florida State Rally in Sarasota, the last one at that location :-( , and a great slow crawl to Miami via Ft Myers and the Everglades.
Our first time, we stayed a month in Miami with side trips to the Keys. Then we slipped down to Ohio Key for a couple of weeks, again adding a trip to Key West. Then, finally, crawling north to start the grand cycle again.
We towed 13,349 miles for the year. We drove only 71 times, averaged 188 miles per driving day, and spent an average of $12.65 per night for sites. A slightly smaller towing year than 2012, and bigger than we expected. But we covered a lot of area and loved it.
